About The Association

Competition in the New England Interscholastic Championships. The New England Interscholastic Squash Association (NEISA) is the organizing body of boys' squash among independent schools in New England. The Association welcomes all squash-playing schools that are members in good standing of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC). There are currently thirty-nine member schools in the Association.

The NEISA runs a championship tournament in late February. In the championships, players from each school accrue team points in seven flights, each with consolation draws. There is a strong emphasis on participation in the event: players are guaranteed a minimum of three matches over the course of the weekend and most play more. In 2011, Taft School won the Class "A" team title, Deerfield Academy won the Class "B" team title, and Avon Old Farms School won the Class "C" team title.

At the end of each season, the Association awards the Brandes Trophy in recognition of the team with strongest dual match record in the regular season. The NEISA also sponsors Team Sportsmanship Awards--one for the north/east region and one for the south/west region--given to the squads best exhibiting standards of fair play and sportsmanship throughout the season and the tournament. In 2011, the Brandes Trophy was won by Belmont Hill School and the Team Sportsmanship Awards were won by Brooks School and Trinity-Pawling School.

The NEISA is governed by a five-person Executive Committee. Four members of the Committee are elected from among the coaches of member schools; the Association's Executive Director serves on the Committee ex officio. Each February, coaches elect one representative from the north/east region and one from the south/west region to serve two-year terms on the Committee. Members of the 2011-2012 NEISA Executive Committee are: Bob Brownell (Belmont Hill School); Doug Burbank (Brooks School); Peter Doucette (Westminster School); Ned Gallagher (ex officio); and Jackson Marvel (Hotchkiss School). The Executive Committee is charged with overseeing the championship tournament--including seeding and making the draws--as well as standardizing rules, procedures, and practices for the sport during the regular season.

Ned Gallagher is the Executive Director of the NEISA and has run the New England Interscholastic Squash Championships since the 1986-1987 season. In addition to his work as a squash coach, Mr. Gallagher is a teacher of history, government, and English and the Director of Athletics at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut.
